Role

This project was our final assignment for a graphic design course, completed in two steps.

Initially, I crafted an identity guide for the brand Bsafe, ensuring a strong portrayal of their images and values. Subsequently, I designed high-fidelity mockups for both mobile and desktop, serving as visual representations to showcase Bsafe's work.

The Problem

Context

Approximately 3,500 coin cell batteries are swallowed by children and toddlers each year, often causing internal burns in the esophagus and fatalities due to their toxicity and charge. To protect children and enable recycling to solve this problem, Bsafe(formerly SafeStoreSolutions) has created a battery storage and removal device.

Their goal is to be simple, intuitive, and child-resistant, and also hope that as many people as possible adopt their solution. Bsafe’s decisions have been grounded in research and data collection, leading to a product that strives to make the batteries in the home safer for children.

Goals

  1. Think of designs that are reflective of the professional and knowledgeable aspects of Bsafe.

  2. The designs should convey the altruistic & family-oriented nature of Bsafe’s work.

  3. Help the brand be professional, clear, respected, and considered an expert in the domain as requested.

The client needs a new product name, a logo, a brand profile, and high-fidelity mockups to utilize for the domain.

  • How could we portray the brand’s identity of being simple, intuitive, and child-resistant?

  • What factors should be included to lead to better product marketing?

The Process

Logotype

The first step was designing the logo for BSafe, and I tried to focus on the product’s main goals of child protection & safety.

The logo presented is symbolic of protection and shows a parent holding a child’s hand from the top view. The green color variation was chosen to convey altruism and the eco-friendly aspects of the product.

Typeface

The typeface Coconpro was used as it has a rounded and child-friendly look, while also being professional and clear. Since Bsafe’s product is related to protecting children and toddlers, I thought this typeface would support its overall image.

Typographic Hierarchy & Concept

Following the creation of low-fidelity wireframes and sketches, I made decisions on the primary colors, typeface, and images to be incorporated into the high-fidelity designs.

The main colors, light green and dark green, come from the logo and were chosen to represent the child-resistant and eco-friendly aspects of Bsafe’s product. Other colors are in monochromatic harmony with the main green colors and were also picked to convey the social and calm image of BSafe.

The typeface Paralucent was chosen as it has a professional but pleasant look that supports the product’s overall image. Also, its variety in font weight makes this font a great fit for both web and mobile design.

The images selected for the design are intended to show the main features of the battery storage device which are mainly about children and toddler protection. They also clearly show the main target of BSafe and the values the brand is trying to hold.

The Reflection

  • From sketching initial ideas to crafting polished, high-fidelity mockups, I’m overall proud of my first logo and brand profile project. Throughout this process, I gained a deeper understanding of the importance of translating a client's goals and preferences into visual design elements. It's not just about aesthetics; it's about capturing and expressing their brand identity authentically.

  • While one of the primary objectives was to engage with the product engineers for valuable feedback, unexpected circumstances disrupted this plan. I think this missed opportunity to connect directly with the engineers posed quite a challenge, as their insights could have enriched the project.

  • Given more time, a valuable improvement would involve revisiting the engagement with the product engineers, the clients, to gather their feedback. This step would be crucial for refining the design based on their opinion and ensuring the end result aligns seamlessly with their expectations.
